The land of stupid – an overview of the fauna. Part 2. June 21, 2008

Today I’d like to look at socialists, which is a depressingly common breed, even in America. They are almost identical to the “progressives”, except they tend to be far less conscious about what they are. Also, specimen have been observed whose preferred habitat is close to the land of sanity.

I just came across a sermon about Judas Iscariot on youtube. It’s about the incident recorded in John 12

Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet … Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? … ”
He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

It’s argued that Judas was a Socialist, because:

1. He had a better plan for how the woman should use her own property.
2. The plan involved redistributing the wealth of “the rich” to “the poor”.
3. In reality, his main agenda was himself. His professed concern for “the poor” was just a cloak for shady business involving personal gain.

The ancient mindset portrayed in the Gospel sounds very like the modern Socialist one to me also. Not surprising once your realize that Socialism comes from deep and timeless human flaws like envy and covetousness.

A socialist is someone who

  • Thinks public bureacracies – preferably with himself in charge – know better how to spend your money than you do.
  • Is affronted that anyone has more wealth than he thinks they “need”.
  • Thinks everyone who has earned wealth has gotten it from “oppressing” or “exploiting” others.
  • Thinks that every freedom you have is a privilege granted by Government, and may rightfully be revoked by them. Among these are
    1. The freedom to become as rich as you want through a lifetime of honest work.
    2. The freedom to hire people at your own terms, like wages, work hours, etc.
    3. The freedom to work for others at your own terms, like wages, work hours, etc.
    4. The freedom to sell your property at the price you want.
    5. The freedom to keep on owning your property, even if the Government feel they need it.
    6. The freedom to raise your kids the way you want.
    7. The freedom to believe stupid things and assemble with others like you on your ranch in Texas.
    8. The freedom to spend your own heard-earned money the way you want.
    9. The freedom to choose your own doctor and hospitals, rather than being forced into something “Universal” the Government has set up.
    10. The freedom of expression.

The Socialist is usually an atheist, but not always. A good counterexample is the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church, whose political views are very well known.
